WHAT IS THE CURRENT SITUATION IN SRI LANKA ?


The country has been struggling to meet the basic needs of the people. Imports of everything from milk to fuel have plunged, spawning Dire food shortages and rolling power cuts are only some aspects of the escalating crisis.

Sri Lanka gave emergency powers on Tuesday to its military and police to detain people without warrants, after a day of clashes that killed 7 people and injured more than 200, in violence that promoted prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resign.

Sri Lanka's prime minister Mahinda rajapaksa has resigned amid mass protests at the government's handling of a deepening economic crisis.

FARMERS FACING CHALLENGES:-

The soil in each paddy has to be turned twice before planting, job that would take a matter of hours with a tractor but takes 2 days for each turn when duck by hand. That's before planting the seedlings, also by hand, a task that takes 10 men a full day.


But this year that work may not be worthwhile. after a government ban last year on imported chemical fertilizers, yields have plummeted, and his harvest is unlikely to cover the labour costs.

Sri Lanka suffered another; the government abruptly banne d chemical fertilizers imports. Ine public, officials framed the move as delivering on a campaign promise to embrace organic farming and fight the fertilizer Mafia in reality, many saw the decision as an attempt to save dollars, according to Wijesinha and other economists. Namal rajapaksh sad the timing of the fertilizer decision was a point to disagreement within the ruling party.


The ban backfired. Sri Lanka's entire agricultural chain - around a third of the labour force and 8% of gross domestic product - faced descriptions. The paddy harvest failed, forcing the government to import rice and start an expensive food aid program to support Divastated farmers. Export earnings from tea, akki revenue source, also dried up.
